American Psychological Foundation – Lizette Peterson – Homer Injury Prevention Award (Deadline: October 1, 2017)

The annual award program supports research into the psychological and behavioral aspects of the prevention of injuries in children and adolescents as reflected in the activities and interests within pediatric psychology of the late Lizette Peterson-Homer. Specifically, the grant supports research related to the prevention of injuries in children and adolescents through accidents, violence, abuse, or suicide.

National Institutes of Health – Reducing Health Disparities Among Minority and Underserved Children (Deadline: May 07, 2020)

The Herb Block Foundation seeks proposals which focus on improving student achievement and healthy development of young people. Projects may include in-school and community-based educational programs, after-school activities, and mentoring programs.

Singing for Change – Grant (Deadline: Ongoing)

The purpose of this funding is to improve the health of adolescents and young adults by strengthening the capacity of state maternal and child health programs to address their needs effectively.

Trending Topic: Chronic Absenteeism in Schools

September marks the beginning of a new school year and an opportunity for school and community leaders to remind students and their families about the importance of school attendance. Chronic absenteeism, or missing 10% or more of school days for any reason, may negatively impact academic achievement and interfere with classroom learning. In fact, research shows that chronic absenteeism is an early indicator of academic risk and school dropout.
There is a clear connection between student health and chronic absenteeism, which, in turn, can impact academic achievement. Schools can combat chronic absenteeism by implementing strategies to ensure that the health needs of students do not present a barrier to attendance and learning. These include school-based health center, expanded school mental health programs, and other health services. This month – and throughout the school year – administrators, educators, and community members can stress the link between attendance and student learning, help students build a habit of daily attendance, and employ strategies and supports to assist families in this goal.
