A recent piece featured by NPR highlights the Escuela Nueva model originating from Colombia. The model was designed with the mindset to ‘take progressive, democratic education theories — cooperation, self-paced learning, arts-focused education — and apply them to some of the poorest, least-resourced schools in the world.’ Now this pedagogy is catching the attention of world education leaders and could pattern a new course for learning even in places like the United States.”

Every Student Succeeds Act Funding Opportunities, a recently released guide from Futures Without Violence, describes resources, programmatic requirements, and allowable uses of funds in ESSA Titles I, II, IV, V, VI, VII, and IX. For each Title, this guide provides a brief description about the program that was authorized, lists the appropriated and authorized funding levels as set forth by Congress, the President’s fiscal year 2017 budget request, and the type of entity that can apply for the funds. Unless otherwise indicated, the language from the law itself is in the Appendix.

Understanding Child Trauma, a recently released brochure from SAMHSA, gives parents and caregivers an overview of the types of traumatic stress that commonly affect children and details on the effects these events have on their physical and psychological health. Includes a list of resources for assisting with recovery.

New resources from The Community Guide Preventive Services Task Force, to be published in the July 2016 issue of the American Journal of Preventive Medicine, recommend the implementation and maintenance of school-based health centers (SBHCs) in low-income communities, based on sufficient evidence of effectiveness in improving educational and health outcomes. This recommendation is based on a systematic review of all available studies that was conducted—with oversight from the Task Force—by scientists and subject matter experts from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in collaboration with a wide range of government, academic, policy, and practice-based partners.
