SCHOOL-BASED HEALTH CENTERS IN MICHIGAN

In school year 1999/2000 Michigan had 41 school-based health centers. While the number of centers has grown by 8 since 1995, state funding has held steady at about $2.9 million -- all from the state's general fund. This money helps to support about half of Michigan's centers. The largest number of centers are concentrated in elementary schools (16), followed by high schools (14) and middle schools (12). School-based health centers in Michigan are eligible to receive Medicaid and CHIP payments; some SBHCs have negotiated contracts with managed care plans. It is one of eight states that requires centers to use operating standards designed by the state.
