News Alerts August 20, 2001 - HHS Proposes Rules for Medicaid Managed Care The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services in the Department of Health and Human Services today published proposed new regulations to protect Medicaid recipients who are enrolled in managed care plans. The proposed regs replace final regulations for Medicaid managed care published on the final day of the Clinton administration. Major changes in the rules aim to give states more flexibility in how they implement the proposed protections. Noting that since 1982, state agencies increasingly have provided Medicaid coverage through contracts with managed care organizations, HHS Secretary Tommy Thompson said, "Medicaid beneficiaries deserve the same rights and protections as all other Americans enrolled in managed care plans." August 15, 2001 - HHS Announces Latest Health Center Grants Secretary of Health and Human Services Tommy Thompson today announced $14.6 million in grants to local health centers in 27 states and Puerto Rico to expand health care access to another 270,000 individuals. The grants are the third round of New Start/Expansion grants issued this year, bringing the total awards so far to $35 million to 47 centers. The funds come from the 2001 budget for the Consolidated Health Centers programs, which include the Community Health Center, Migrant Health Centers, Health Care for the Homeless, Public Housing Primary Care, and Healthy Schools-Healthy Communities programs. August 9, 2001 - Preview of HRSA 2002 Funds Availability The Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) today published comprehensive program and application information about competitive grants the agency expects to fund in fiscal year 2002. This preview is intended to replace multiple notices of funds availability that have previously appeared in the Federal Register. The grants preview includes a description of competitive and other
grant programs scheduled for awards in fiscal year 2002, with instructions
on how to contact HRSA for information and to receive application kits.
Specifically, the preview lists program title, the legislative authority
for the grant award, the purpose of the grant award, who is eligible
to apply, funding priorities and preferences, estimated dollar amount
of the competition, estimated number of awards, estimated project period,
application deadline and letter of intent deadline if any, projected
award date, and program contact with phone and e-mail addresses.
