February 23, 2005 -- Bush Budget Would
Cut Some Health Programs
President Bush's proposed fiscal 2006 budget would scrap or reduce
154 domestic programs. Among the programs for which no funding is
requested next year are the following health-related programs in
the Department of Health and Human Services:
- Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Congressional Earmarks,
which got $60 million this year;
- CDC Preventive Health and Health Services Block Grants, which
got $131 million this year;
- CDC Youth Media Campaign, which got $59 million this year;
- Emergency Medical Services for Children, which got $20 million
this year;
- Health Facilities Construction Congressional Earmarks, which
got $476 million this year;
- Healthy Community Access Program, which got $82 million this
year;
- Trauma Care, which got $3 million this year;
- Traumatic Brain Injury, which got $9 million this year;
- Universal Newborn Hearing Screening, which got $10 million this
year.
The President's budget has now been submitted to Congress, which
may or may not approve some or all of the requested cuts.
