SCHOOL-BASED HEALTH CENTERS IN WEST VIRGINIA
More than 22,000 West Virginia public school students, 7% of all public school students in the state, attend a school served by a school-based health center. In 1999-2000, West Virginia had 34 centers, an increase of 3 over the last two years. With one exception, the school-based health centers are administered by non-profit community health centers. The West Virginia Bureau of Public Health provides $700,000 to 14 primary care centers to organize and deliver care in school-based health centers. In a few cases, local hospitals have helped to enhance services by providing funding and technical assistance to some primary care centers. In addition, the Claude Worthington Benedum Foundation funds technical assistance and evaluation for school-based health centers.
