To help nonprofits more effectively advocate for their cause, the W.K. Kellog Foundation and the Center for Lobbying in the Public Interest created the online publication, Effective Advocacy at All Levels of Government.

Findings from the Girls Study Group, run by the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention, are now available.  The group’s most recent report examined reasons behind the recent increase in girls’ arrest rates and factors that protect against delinquency.

New from the Center

Results from our survey on Immigrant and Refugee Children are in! The 189 survey respondents came from 46 states and 97.9% worked with students from other countries. Over 50% of respondents were part of a school nursing program. Translation difficulties and different cultural interpretations of health or mental health issues were reported as common problems facing school personnel. Of the respondents, 80% worked in schools that made a special effort to reach out to the families of immigrant children and 71% worked in a school that hired more multicultural/multilingual staff to address the needs of students from other countries. Detailed results of this survey, as well as surveys we have conducted in the past, are available on our website at http://healthinschools.org/publications%20and%20resources/polls%20and%20surveys/web%20based%20surveys.aspx

California Supreme Court Rules only Licensed Nurses Can Give Insulin Shots
Last week, the California Supreme Court ruled in favor of the California School Nurses Association and others by overturning the state Department of Education’s 2007 advisory regarding insulin administration. Judge Lloyd Connelly ruled the advisory, designed to alleviate nursing shortages in public schools by permitting trained, but unlicensed staff to administer insulin shots when a nurse or parent was unavailable, violated the state’s Nursing Practice Act.

Kellog Foundation and the Center for Lobbying in the Public Interest, Effective Advovacy at All Levels of Government is an online publication designed to prepare nonprofits for engagement at the local, state, and federal level. To meet this goal, the publication focuses on generalized processes and principles, guiding questions and case stories.

The Girls Study Group was convened by the U.S. Department of Justice’s Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention to examine the increasing juvenile arrest rates among girls.  According to the report, girls have not become more violent in recent years; instead, the juvenile justice system has changed how it responds to girls’ behavior.  Future research must address the lack of information on good prevention and intervention programming for girls.
