  • New Resources

A new report from Public/Private Ventures,
The Case for School-Based Integration of Services – Changing the ways students, families and communities engage with their schools,  assesses the literature evaluating school-based services. School-Based Health Care has been found to improve youth’s access to health care and this translated to enhanced connectedness to schools and learning outcomes. This service particularly benefits children in communities that are underserved. Interestingly, children that use these services use them more often and shift the focus of visits to preventative care. Similarly, School-based Out-of-School Time Programs extend program activities to more youth because they do not have to travel to participate. These programs have been shown to improve relations with peers and school faculty as well as deter students from engaging in high-risk behaviors. Finally, family supports programs were evaluated. These programs provide educational and employment opportunities to parents. Participating families generally have higher school performance from the students and better behavioral outcomes. This report will be of interest to policy makers, school-based health workers, educators, families, and academics working to increase access to school-based health services.

Anticipating the Impacts of a 2008-2010 Recession,  from the Foundation for Child Development, finds that progress in the quality of life for American children has fluctuated since 2002. In this report, quality of life is measured by the composit “Child and Youth Well-Being Index” (CWI). The CWI peaked at 102.17 in 2002 at which point the index fluctuated. CWI for 2008 will not be available for at least two more years, though all projections indicate that progress made since 1975 will be reversed. The percentage of children living in poverty is expected to reach 21% in 2010, 27% children will have at least one parent not working full time in 2010, and the median family income is expected to decline. All of these factors are expected to contribute to the declining CWI since the onset of the recession.

Adolescents and Electronic Media: Growing up Plugged In,  released by Child Trends, explores the various health outcomes of electronic media world on children and adolescents. This brief looked at the body of research associating violence to media consumption including television and video games. Further, adolescents exposed to smoking and alcohol use in the media are more likely to smoke and/or drink alcohol. It is noted that little research has focused on the association between sexual activity and media consumption. Ergonomic injuries, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, and cancer have also been attributed to media consumption in some research studies. Importantly, the brief identifies the positive health influences of media including the fact that 28% of adolescents use the Internet to access information regarding health, dieting, and physical exercise.  The report continues to address the social development impacts of media, impact on education, and access to media. These elements are all important in understanding the effects of increased media consumption for today’s youth and adolescents.
