New from the Center
A year ago the Center published “Screening and Assessing Immigrant and Refugee Youth in School-Based Mental Health Programs,” an issue brief that summed up what is known about mental health tools that support culturally competent mental health care. The positive responses we’ve received encourages us to re-introduce the paper to make sure valuable information is available to health professionals across the country. We extend our deepest appreciation to the authors, Dina Birman, PhD, Associate Professor in the Department of Psychology at the University of Illinois at Chicago and Wing Yi Chan, a doctoral student at the University of Illinois at Chicago, for the fine quality of their work. To download this issue brief, click here.
The Center has released Issue Brief #2, Partnering with Parents and Families to Support Immigrant and Refugee Children at School, written by Eileen Gale Kugler. The issue brief provides background on the impact of the immigrant and refugee experience on children and youth and the importance of engaging the entire family in addressing the mental health needs of immigrant and refugee students to build a crucial home-school partnership that may open doors to student success. On Thursday, May 21, 2pm EST the Center held its third webinar on Understanding the rise in suicide attempts in Latina teens presented by Dr. Luis Zayas, professor at the School of Social Work at Washington University in St. Louis. New Resources
The recent report from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, Cross-Systems Financing Project Report, describes how cross-systems financing affects the experiences of children and adults with substance-use disorders, behavioral issues, and mental-health diagnoses who move between care systems and services. Cross-systems financing plans represent strategic, interagency collaborations. Furthermore, this report recounts the experiences of using Cross-systems financing plans as part of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation’s “Learning Community” in Franklin County/Columbus, Ohio, Philadelphia, Georgia, Iowa, New Mexico, and Washington State. Overall this report will be of interest to public health care professionals, program operators, and policy makers seeking to identify a framework or pragmatic examples of providing continuous and adequate mental health services.
Children in Immigrant Families Chart New Path, a recent publication from the Population Reference Bureau, assesses children of immigrants through a demographic lens to identify how immigrant families influence the composition of the U.S. and what social and economic barriers these children will face. Children of immigrants account for 22 percent of all U.S. children and are expected to continue being the largest growing portion of the population. As this trend continues, the U.S. is on a path to be composed of a “majority minority” where less than half are non-Hispanic white. Key social and economic barriers to consider for immigrant children include poverty, education and language ability, and proficiency of English speakers in the family. This report will be important as immigrant stakeholders work to ensure immigrant children in different contexts fulfill their basic needs.
State of Nutrition Education and Promotion for Children and Adolescents, by the Society for Nutrition Education, makes recommendations to Congress and other policy makers regarding the formation of consolidated and comprehensive Team Nutrition Networks (TNN) at the national level, administered at the State level, and then implemented on the local level. The report argues that a well-funded TNN is able to support a nutrition education program in each State, provide financial stability, promote collaboration and partnership formation, provide the opportunity for tailoring State programs to their specific context, and ensure wellness policies are implemented. A TNN will serve to address the nutrition education gap in pre-kindergarten through grade twelve. Finally, this report also delineates the specific responsibilities of all stakeholders.
