New Resources
To highlight the effects of recent cuts in state Medicaid and Children’s Health Insurance Programs, Families USA has released the report, A Painful Recession: States Cut Health Care Safety Net Programs.
First Focus, the National Association of Community Health Centers, and the Children’s Health Fund have joined to compare the House and Senate’s proposals to reauthorize the State Children’s Health Insurance Program in their recent report, Children’s Health Insurance Program Reauthorization Side-by-Side.
To help school nurses raise awareness about the dangers of meningococcal disease and the benefits of immunization, the National Association of School Nurses has created the Get S.M.A.R.T. About Meningitis! online educational resource kit.
New from the Center
A new report is available from the Center on School Mental Health Services for the 21st Century: Lessons from the District of Columbia School Mental Health Program. In the report, the Center developed a plan for sustaining and expanding school-based mental health services in Washington, DC. This report reviews the history of school mental health in the District of Columbia, reports on lessons learned from other states and localities, and identifies best and promising practices in organizational management, program development, professional training, and financing strategies.
On February 24, 2009, 2pm EST the Center is sponsoring a webinar on Helping immigrant and refugee students achieve school success: Partnering with families to support student mental health. The webinar will highlight strategies that engage family members, who often provide a close-knit, protective force in the child’s life.

U.S. Department of Education – Carol M. White Physical Education Grant Program

The Carol M. White Physical Education Program provides grants to initiate, expand or enhance physical education programs for students in kindergarten through the 12th grade. After-school programs are eligible for the award. This program is seeking applicants that work to improve and maintain the physical well-being of students, that enhance student’s physical, mental and social development, and that foster opportunities to develop positive social and cooperative skills through physical activity participation.

The U.S. Department of Justice recognizes that youth gangs continue to have a significant adverse influence on youth, families and whole communities. The OJJDP FY 2009 Gang Prevention Coordination Assistance Program awards funding to localities in order to improve coordination of local, state and Federal resources for prevention, gang intervention and gang enforcement.

The U.S. Department of Education wants to increase access to quality mental care by funding programs that integrate school systems with local mental health systems. The Integration of Schools and Mental Health Systems program supports organizations that improve or develop collaborative efforts between school-based service systems and mental health systems to increase prevention, diagnostic and treatment services provided to students.
Robert Wood Johnson Foundation – Communities Creating Healthy Environments (Deadline: 2/26/09)
Communities Creating Healthy Environments is a national program of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) that seeks to prevent childhood obesity through increased access to healthy foods and places for children to play. RWJF is currently accepting applications for programs in up to ten communities that are at high risk for obesity. RWJF supports policy advocacy for improving access to healthy food and creation and maintenance of recreation environments.

As of December 2008, at least 43 states were facing budget deficits for 2009 or 2010. According to Families USA’s report, A Painful Recession: States Cut Health Care Safety Net Programs, many states have cut or are planning to cut their Medicaid and Children’s Health Insurance Programs by reducing enrollment and eligibility, cutting benefits, increasing out-of-pocket costs for program enrollees, and/or reducing payments to health care providers.
Children’s Health Insurance Program Reauthorization Side-by-Side is a report from First Focus, the National Association of Community Health Centers, and the Children’s Health Fund which provides comparisons on the House and Senate SCHIP reauthorization proposals and details any areas of agreement. The report is organized by provision and, when applicable, joint policy recommendations are included.
The National Association of School Nurses’ Get S.M.A.R.T About Meningitis! online educational resource kit contains materials and strategies to help school nurses build community awareness on the dangers of meningococcal disease and the benefits of immunization. Materials are designed to be easily adapted to include school-specific information and include a PowerPoint presentation, student and community education materials (parent letter, community letter, fact sheet, frequently asked questions document, newsletter article, and flyer).
