New Resources

Tools for Schools, released by The National Association of School Nurses, is a toolkit designed to educate parents and healthcare professionals on illnesses such as pertussis (whooping cough), hepatitis A, hepatitis B, polio, and influenza.

Special Supplement of the Journal of Hunger & Environmental Nutrition,
released as a special issue of the Journal of Hunger & Environmental Nutrition, identifies research opportunities to develop interventions within agriculture, food, and health systems.

In Interviews with Refugee Youth, by the State of Utah Refugee Office, four young refugees talk about the success and challenges of school, integration, maintaining family traditions, and keeping out of trouble. .


New from the Center

Supporting Immigrant & Refugee Communities (SIRC) Listserv is now active! The SIRC listserv is for individuals and organizations interested in improving the well-being of immigrant and refugee children, youth and families. The listserv provides an opportunity for members to pose questions to the field, share information, and network with colleagues nationwide. We will also share lessons learned, tools, and information gained during the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation’s Caring Across Communities grant initiative. Congratulations! We want to share the news that Brandi Robinson, Research Associate with the Center, has accepted a new position at the Partnership for Prevention here in Washington, DC. Long-time colleagues know that Brandi has been a member of the CHHCS team since she was a grad student in the GW School of Public Health and Health Services in 2004.  We deeply appreciate her commitment to the Center and to the field. And we are delighted she will be only 3 blocks away in her new position. We know you will join us in wishing her great success in this next step in her professional journey. Addressing the Legal Issues Impacting Refugee and Immigrant Families, a video presentation by Mr. Fred Tsao, has been posted to the website. In this lecture, Mr. Tsao presents information on legal issues facing immigrants in the US including legal immigration categories, how immigrants can become citizens, sponsorship, public benefit eligibility, the impact of 1996 Welfare Reform, rules on public charge, and constitutional rights of illegal immigrants. Mr. Tsao is the Policy Director at the Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights. Treating Traumatized Immigrant and Refugee Youth, a webinar sponsored by The Center for Health and Health Care in Schools, was presented on December 10, 2009. Many immigrant and refugee youth in the United States have experienced traumatic events, including personal violence, community violence, war, forced displacement, loss of family members, and separation from loved ones. Treating trauma-related symptoms and promoting healthy coping are crucial steps towards helping these new American youth survive and thrive in their new home, schools and communities. The Lancet Retracts Paper Linking Vaccine to Autism
The Lancet has retracted a paper it published by Wakefield et al. According to the British Medical Journal, the paper “implied an association, later shown to be spurious, between gastrointestinal illness, the combined measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine, and an autism-like disorder in a sample of 12 children.”

Tools for Schools, released by The National Association of School Nurses, is a toolkit designed to educate parents and healthcare professionals on illnesses such as pertussis (whooping cough), hepatitis A, hepatitis B, polio, and influenza. The toolkit discusses the risks of the diseases in children, adolescents, and adults and the importance of receiving the appropriate immunizations. The toolkit contains information for kindergartens, middle and high schools, and for parents and teachers.

Special Supplement of the Journal of Hunger & Environmental Nutrition, released as a special issue of the Journal of Hunger & Environmental Nutrition, identifies research opportunities to develop interventions within agriculture, food, and health systems. It also includes policies and actions for achieving communities that allow healthier diets and reduced obesity. The collection of articles is the result of the Airlie Conference held in April 2009.
