CDC Analyzes High School Athletes and Heat Related Illness

Heat related illness in high school athletes causes themcollectively to lose more than 9,000 days of play time each year according to astudy published in the Center for Disease Control and Prevention August 20,2010 Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report. The study looked at data from theNational High School Sports-Related Injury Surveillance System between theyears of 2005 and 2009.  The data wasgathered on nine sports and used a sample of 100 high schools. The highest rateof time lost to heat related illness was among football players and thetime-loss heat illnesses occurred most frequently during August whilepracticing or playing football. The study advises high school athletic programsto implement the National Athletic Trainers’ Association’s heat-acclimatizationguidelines and for athletes, parents, coaches, and trainers to know the signsand symptoms of heat related illness and how to best prevent it.
