New Resources

The Hamilton Fish Institute on School and Community Violence has released the Parent’s Guide to Truancy. According to the guide, children who miss school have a reduced chance of graduating and may become involved in crime.

Highlighting truancy prevention best practices, the U.S. Office of Justice Programs and the U.S. Department of Education have partnered to provide a collection of Promising Strategies.

The National Eating Disorders Association’s Educator Toolkit is now available and provides a comprehensive overview of eating disorders for educators, school personnel, and parents.

The report, Dropout and Completion Rates in the United States: 2006, was recently released by the U.S. Department of Education’s National Center for Education Statistics. Findings include a downward trend in dropouts from 6.1 percent in 1972 to 3.8 percent in 2006.

    California Passes Law Requiring Display of Caloric Content on Restaurant Menus
    On September 30, 2008 California became the first state to pass legislation requiring restaurants to display caloric content information prominently along with menu items. The law, known as SB 1420 (Padilla), affects chain restaurants operating more than 20 locations in the state.

    FDA Rejects Move to Ban Cold and Cough Medicines for Young Children
    The FDA’s Center for Drug Evaluation and Research listened to public comment at a hearing on October 2, 2008 to assist in their drafting of recommendations for use of over-the-counter cough and cold medications for young children. The American Academy of Pediatrics argues that OTC products are ineffective in treating colds and coughs in children under 6 and called for a ban on the sale of these products.

    The Hamilton Fish Institute on School and Community Violence at The George Washington University has released a 36 page Parent’s Guide to Truancy. This booklet is based on best practices and provides parents and guardians with strategies for preventing and reducing incidences of truancy. Tips for working with the child, school, and community are included.

    As part of their truancy reduction efforts, the U.S. Office of Justice Programs and the U.S. Department of Education have compiled a list of Promising Strategies, including best practices and related publications. Numerous resources are provided for families, juvenile justice workers, and school personnel.

    The National Eating Disorders Association Toolkit contains an eating disorders glossary, frequently asked questions, common myths, and treatment locations. With specific regard to schools, information is provided on the impact of eating disorders on cognitive abilities, strategies for assisting students with eating disorders, communication tips, and tips for psychologists and coaches.

    The U.S. Department of Education’s new report, Dropout and Completion Rates in the United States: 2006, tracks dropout rates based on age, grade, sex, race/ethnicity, family income, state of residence and more. According to the report, the 2006 average annual income of persons ages 18 through 65 who had not completed high school was roughly $21,000. In comparison, the 2006 average annual income of those who completed their education with a high school credential, including a General Educational Development (GED) certificate, was over $31,400.
