New Resources
The National League of Cities Institute for Youth, Education, and Families has published an Action Kit on Creating a Youth Master Plan. This kit can help communities develop sustained and coordinated strategies to improve outcomes for local youth.
The importance of school-community connectedness, as described by The Coalition of Community Schools, is supported in the recently released Community Agenda for America's Public Schools.
FDA & You is a newsletter on current health topics for teens, parents, and educators from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. The most recent issue examines the pathology, testing, and treatment of staph infections.

Teen Birth Rate Increases in 2006
The birth rate for teens 15-19 rose by 3% in 2006, marking the first increase in fourteen years. The 435,427 births to teens also marks a 5% increase in the total number of births to teens over 2005. A recent report from the National Campaign to Prevent Teen and Unplanned Pregnancy, notes that the rate of decline has slowed each year since 2003 suggesting this uptick may not be a one-time anomaly.
Nearly 3 Million Children Uninsured Though Parent Has Insurance
More than 9 million children in the US have no health insurance coverage and over 18 million lack insurance coverage for at least part of the year. A recent study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) reported that nearly a third of the children uninsured during the year have least one parent who is insured and 1.3 million children of those were uninsured for the entire year.
New Resources
The National League of Cities’ Institute for Youth, Education, and Families has recently released an Action Kit on Creating a Youth Master Plan. This kit provides municipal leaders with tips, advice, and examples to develop and implement their own master plan. Benefits of a youth master plan include more effective coordination of services for youth and improved resource allocation.
The Community Agenda for America’s Public Schools highlights the importance of collaboration between communities and schools to provide students with the support and opportunities necessary to ensure success. Specific strategies and policy recommendations are included. This plan has been endorsed by over 130 education, health, and policy organizations.
In each issue, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s FDA & You newsletter examines relevant health news in an easy to read format. Recent issues have covered food allergies, microwave safety, health literacy, and foodbourne illness. Pre-packaged lesson plans for health and science teachers are included with each issue. All lessons and newsletters are available online.
