New Resources

Juvenile crime rates have decreased over the past decade, as has the push for harsh punishments for juvenile offenders. The Future of Children’s journal issue on Juvenile Justice promotes evidence-based policy and practice reforms that acknowledge the differences between adolescents and adults.

The National Association of School Nurses is offering an online, continuing education program on Caring for Students with Food Allergies.

A new report from the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality entitled, Effectiveness of Weight Management Programs in Children and Adolescents, examines behavioral, pharmacological, and surgical weight management interventions for overweight and/or obese children and adolescents.

The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, in partnership with numerous other health related agencies, has produced a video on the importance of clinical research with children.

    The Indianapolis Colts and Grange Insurance have joined together to offer Student All Star Grants. These grants are available to fund student-led community service projects, thereby giving Indiana youth the opportunity to make their community a better place.

    Goody's -- Good Deeds for Schools (Deadline: 11/1/08)
    Goody's Good Deeds for Schools is designed to help local schools pay for the things they really need, but can not afford through regular education funding. Past awards have provided a new playground and walking trail, videoconferencing equipment to reach out to ill students who are homebound or confined to a hospital, and a mentoring program.

    National AIDS Fund -- Southern REACH Initiative (Selected States) (Deadline: 11/10/08)
    The National AIDS Fund, with support from the Ford Foundation and the Elton John AIDS Foundation, has announced the second year of the Southern REACH (Regional Expansion of Access and Capacity to Address HIV/AIDS) initiative. This initiative will provide grant resources in three categories: 1) Organizational Capacity Building; 2) Programmatic Capacity Building; and 3) Policy Advocacy.

    The American Association of University Woman’s Community Action grants provide funds to individuals, AAUW branches and AAUW state organizations as well as local community-based nonprofit organizations for innovative programs or non-degree research projects that promote education and equity for women and girls.

    The Palm Foundation -- Youth at Risk Grants (Deadline: 12/1/08)
    The Palm Foundation will make cash grants to non-profit organizations that focus on issues directly related to the education of youth at risk. The Foundation is particularly interested in supporting magnet and alternative schools and projects that assist children with special needs.

    Prevention Task Force Recommends Behavioral Counseling To Prevent Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs) for Sexually Active Adolescents
    Drawing on research from the past 20 years, the United States Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) has recommended endorsing behavioral counseling for sexually active adolescents. The USPSTF identified sexually active adolescents at high risk for STIs and suggests multiple session counseling delivered in groups to be one of the most successful interventions for this population.

    Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Reports Increased Vaccination Rates Among 13-17 Year Olds
    On October 10, 2008 the CDC released data from its National Immunization Survey (NIS) – Teens for 2007 showing substantial increases in vaccination rates since 2006. Reporting on coverage rates for the human papiloma virus (HPV) vaccine, which protects against certain forms of the virus known to cause cervical cancer, the survey found 25.1% of female teens surveyed had received at least one dose of the vaccine (three doses represent the full course).

    American Academy of Pediatrics Increases Recommended Daily Intake of Vitamin D
    In an effort to prevent rickets, a disease causing bone softness resulting from vitamin D deficiency, the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) increased its recommended daily intake of vitamin D from 200 IU (international units) to 400 IU for infants, children and adolescents.

    President Bush Signs Health Care Safety Net Act of 2008 into Law
    On October 8th, President Bush signed the Health Care Safety Net Act of 2008, reauthorizing appropriations for 2008-2012 for community health centers and the National Health Service Corps program. The law supports various groups working to meet the health care needs of medically underserved populations and makes provisions for a national study of school-based health centers.

    New Resources

    The Future of Children’s recent journal issue on Juvenile Justice addresses current research on adolescent development and young offenders and looks at the role of race, gender, mental health, and substance abuse for this population. Policy and practice recommendations are made, including the importance of matching offenders with programs that meet their specific needs instead of criminalizing delinquency and ignoring the developmental realities of adolescence.

    The National Association of School Nurse’s newest online continuing education program, Making the Difference in Caring for Students with Food Allergies, is adapted from a session presented at NASN’s 40th Annual Conference. In this multimedia program, Sally Schoessler, RN, SNT, MSEd, Executive Director of the New York Statewide School Health Services Center, identifies the pathophysiology and treatment of anaphylaxis in the school setting and discusses school-based strategies for managing food allergies.

    The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality’s new report, Effectiveness of Weight Management Programs in Children and Adolescents, finds behavioral interventions in schools or specialty health care settings can result in small to moderate short-term improvements for weight management. Research to evaluate the treatment of obese children has increased in quantity and quality over the past few years, but more work must be done to improve current practice and policy development.

    The National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute, with support from numerous health related organizations, has created a video on the importance of clinical research in children. This video explains why child-specific clinical research is needed and addresses concerns of parents.
