The National League of Cities Institute for Youth, Education, and Families is offering a free, hour-long audio conference on Youth Violence Prevention: A Public Health Approach.
First Focus has compiled a collection of research briefs entitled Impacts of Early Childhood Programs. Findings indicate most early childhood programs have a positive impact on children’s emotional and behavioral outcomes, health and safety.

US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Announces Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans
HHS released new guidelines this week with suggested physical activity levels for Americans. The guidelines are based on research from an advisory committee and are designed to provide flexibility so that people can incorporate physical activities they like into their daily routines.
New Resources
The United Spinal Association’s Disability Etiquette Handbook provides tips on how to positively interact with individuals with disabilities in order to raise everyone’s comfort level. Many different disabilities are addressed, including mobility and sensory impairments, developmental and psychiatric disabilities, HIV/AIDS, learning disabilities, Tourette syndrome and many others. The booklet is also available in Spanish.
The National League of Cities audio conference on Youth Violence Prevention: A Public Health Approach will bring together city leaders from across the country to explain the strategies they are using to address this problem. The audio conference will take place on Thursday, October 23 at 2:30 p.m. Eastern Time. Registration for the call closes two days before the event.
First Focus’s report entitled Impacts of Early Childhood Programs examines state pre-kindergarten, Head Start, Early Head Start, model early childhood programs, and nurse home visiting. A separate research brief addresses each type of program. The results are summarized in a table, which can also be used to make comparisons between programs.
