New Resources

First Focus has analyzed children’s health coverage under President Elect Obama’s proposed health care plan.

Families USA’s recently released report, The Candidates and Your Health Care Costs, examines how President Elect Obama’s health care plans may affect health insurance costs.

My Bright Future: Physical Activity and Healthy Eating is a youth friendly website run by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to encourage the development of healthy behaviors in young women.


New from the Center

Results from our survey on Immigrant and Refugee Children are in! The 189 survey respondents came from 46 states and 97.9% worked with students from other countries. Over 50% of respondents were part of a school nursing program. Translation difficulties and different cultural interpretations of health or mental health issues were reported as common problems facing school personnel. Of the respondents, 80% worked in schools that made a special effort to reach out to the families of immigrant children and 71% worked in a school that had hired more multicultural/multilingual staff to address the needs of students from other countries.     VSA arts and the MetLife Foundation have designed the Arts Connect All funding opportunity to encourage arts organizations to create or enhance multi-session, inclusive education programs by strengthening partnerships with local public schools.     The United States Golf Association’s "For the Good of the Game" Grants Initiative in an effort to make golf more affordable and accessible. Through this effort, the USGA supports organizations that use the game and its values as a vehicle to improve the quality of life for individuals and for society in general. This annual initiative focuses on positively impacting young people (particularly minorities, girls, economically disadvantaged, and others with limited access to the game of golf) and individuals with disabilities.

    Americans Dissatisfied with Medical Care Delivery and More Have Problems with Medical Bills and Debt
    Two recent reports from the Commonwealth Fund review concerns Americans have with the US health care system. “Losing Ground: How the Loss of Adequate Health Insurance Is Burdening Working Families,” reports that 41% of working age Americans (72 million) have medical bill problems or are paying off medical debt up from 34% in 2005. In their second report, “Public Views on US Health Care System Organization: A Call for New Directions,” the fund released findings from a recent survey where 82% respondents said they believed the health care system should be fundamentally changed or rebuilt.

    By taking into account the unique health care needs of children, First Focus has analyzed President Elect Obama's Health Plan & Children’s Coverage. The report examines how children would be affected.

    Families USA’s new report, The Candidates and Your Health Care Costs, evaluates President Elect Obama's health care plan in multiple areas, including premiums, pre-exsisting conditions, and state law.

    The U.S. Department of Health and Human Service’s My Bright Future: Physical Activity and Healthy Eating website provides tips to help young women start conversations with health care providers and set and reach health-related goals. The site also has a form to help this population develop an understanding of their BMI.
