The benefits of a well-implemented social and emotional learning program are described in the Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning’s recently released brief, Social and Emotional Learning and Student Benefits: Implications for the Safe Schools/Healthy Students Core Elements.
To understand how immigration issues are presented in the media, results from The Opportunity Agenda’s recent report are discussed in the November 25th webinar Public Opinion and Media Analysis: Immigration in Public Discourse.
To bring together key funders, Grantmakers for Children, Youth & Families is offering a webinar on December 4th to discuss convergent areas of intergenerational interest.
New from the Center
Results from our survey on Immigrant and Refugee Children are in! The 189 survey respondents came from 46 states and 97.9% worked with students from other countries. Over 50% of respondents were part of a school nursing program. Translation difficulties and different cultural interpretations of health or mental health issues were reported as common problems facing school personnel. Of the respondents, 80% worked in schools that made a special effort to reach out to the families of immigrant children and 71% worked in a school that hired more multicultural/multilingual staff to address the needs of students from other countries.

The Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning’s research brief,
Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) and Student Benefits: Implications for the Safe Schools/Healthy Students Core Elements provides an overview of their recent analysis of more than 700 research studies. According to the brief, school, family, and community programming designed to promote social and emotional learning in children lead to an overall improvement of 23% in students’ social and emotional skills and an 11 percentile point gain in achievement test scores.
