The U.S. Department of Agriculture is accepting applications for its Human Nutrition and Obesity Grant program. The purpose of this program is to support initiatives that address the complex problem of obesity by studying the behavioral and environmental factors that influence obesity and the development and evaluation of effective interventions to prevent obesity.

National Institutes of Health -- School-Based Interventions to Prevent Obesity (Deadline: 6/16/07)
The National Institutes of Health is accepting applications for its School-Based Interventions to Prevent Obesity Grant Program. The purpose of this program is to encourage the formation of partnerships between academic institutions and school systems in order to develop and implement controlled, school-based intervention strategies designed to reduce the prevalence of obesity in childhood.

Senate Bills Address Child Mental Health
Two bills introduced in the United States Senate May 8 call attention to the need for school-based and other mental health services to children. The Mental Health in Schools Act, S. 1332, notes that of the 95,000 public schools in the United States, only half report having formal partnerships with community mental health providers to deliver mental health services, though recent studies indicate one in five children has a diagnosable mental disorder and one in ten children has an emotional or behavioral disorders that is severe enough to cause substantial impairment in functioning at school or in the community.
