    New Resources

The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation released
Walking and Biking to School, Physical Activity and Health Outcomes, which identified that in 1969 42% of students between the ages of 5 and 18 walked or biked to school compared to 13% in 2001. During this same time frame, childhood obesity increased from 4.2% to 17%. This research brief lays out the key findings from research studies that assessed the various factors mediating walking or biking to schools. Some key findings include:  skinfold measurements were lower in fourth grade boys who walked or biked to school, children and adolescents that cycled to school had greater cardiorespiratory fitness, distance to school and quality of the sidewalk system are important indicators, and children are five times more likely to walk or bike to school when parents have less concerns about traffic and safety. This information will be useful to policy makers, educators, clinicians, and families interested in curbing physical inactivity of children and adolescents.

Physical Inactivity in U.S. Adolescents: Family, Neighborhood, and Individual Factors, released by Child Trends, aimed to extend research on physical activity beyond television and cigarette use to how family and neighborhoods act as contributors. There is a decline in physical activity as children translate into adolescence; 90% of 9 to 11 year olds exercise at least 1 hour a day compared to 30% of 15 year olds. Given that adolescent behavior with physical activity is a strong predictor of physical activity in adulthood, it is important to understand characteristics of inactive adolescents in order increase activity early on. Key findings of how families and neighborhoods contribute to inactivity include: inactive adolescents are more likely to come from families that do not exercise, sedentary teens are more likely than their active counterparts to use technology at least three hours each day, are overweight 15% compared to 12% in active adolescents, and are more likely to eat less than three times a week with their families. These and other findings have important implications on current programs that focus on school and community-based interventions.

The Pew Hispanic Center released a study, Latino Children: A Majority Are U.S.-Born Offspring of Immigrants on May 28. The Pew analysis of Census data reports that 22% of all children under age 18 in the U.S. are Hispanics. The share of children who are of Latino origin is project to increase to 29% by 2025. The future implication of this is there will be increasing proportions of second and third generation Hispanic children. Past trends indicate that the change in generational composition impacts employment, education and social outcomes in their lifetimes. These outcomes are mediated by differences in English-speaking ability, level of parent education attained, socioeconomic status, and familial structures. These key findings are applicable for a number of stakeholders, including educators, clinicians, policy makers, community workers, and families.
