Patterns of Childhood Obesity Prevention Legislation in the United States, an article in the July 2007 edition of Preventing Chronic Disease, tracks proposed and adopted childhood obesity prevention bills and resolutions in all fifty states from 2003-2005. Legislation related to school vending machines, physical activity in schools as well as community-wide healthy living initiatives were the focus of this article. 717 bills and 134 resolutions related to this obesity prevention were included in this analysis. American Lung Association of Virginia -- Field Director for Training and Education (Alexandria, VA)
The Field Director for Training and Education will be responsible for implementing the Not-On-Tobacco smoking cessation and lifestyle change program for teen smokers, which will also include recruiting and training volunteer facilitators. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services is accepting applications for its Family Planning Services Grants program. The purpose of the program is to establish and operate voluntary family planning services projects in 21 designated states that focus on the following: (1) programs to assure ongoing family planning and related preventive health services that will improve the overall health of individuals; (2) programs to assure access to a broad range of acceptable and effective family planning methods, infertility services, effective contraceptive methods, services for adolescents, and related preventive health services including STD and HIV prevention education and testing, abstinence education, and cancer screening and prevention, and (3) programs to encourage the participation of families, parents, and/or other adults in the decision of minors seeking family planning services.

The William T. Grant Foundation Youth Service Improvement Grants Program provides funding to community-based organizations in the New York metropolitan area that improve the quality of services for young people ages 8-25. Programs that target children who are not enrolled in school, are involved in foster care or juvenile justice programs, and those that work with students who are two or more years above-age for their grade will be given priority.

'Children's Congress' Calls Attention to Diabetes  
As they do every year, advocates for more federal spending to research and cure both forms of diabetes—type 1, formerly known as “juvenile diabetes” and type 2, formerly known as "adult onset diabetes"—brought a Children’s Congress made up of young diabetes patients to Capitol Hill this week, for a conference and congressional testimony sponsored largely by Novo Nordisk, manufacturer of insulin products and delivery devices such as the insulin pen.

Senate Bill Would Give SBHCs Medicaid and SCHIP Payments   
Legislation introduced in the U.S. Senate June 20 would allow states to make school-based health centers (SBHCs) eligible for reimbursement under Medicaid and the State Children’s Health Insurance Program (SCHIP) for comprehensive health and mental health services provided to children and adolescents who are enrolled in Medicaid and SCHIP.
