New Resources
The Data Resource Center for Child and Adolescent Health provides interactive, online access to national and state data from the National Survey of Children's Health (NSCH) and the National Survey of Children with Special Health Care Needs (CSHCN), plus resources and technical support for using the data results.
The Physicians for Social Responsibility’s Pediatric Environmental Health Toolkit is a combination of reference guides and health education materials on preventing exposures to toxic chemicals and other substances that affect infant and child health.
The Federal Interagency Forum on Child and Family Statistics has released its report, America’s Children in Brief: Key National Indicators of Well-Being, 2008. Findings include increases in teen births and low birth weight babies.

FDA and CDC Continue to Find Gardasil A Safe and Effective Vaccine
Responding to concerns raised by consumers, health professionals and parents about the vaccine Gardasil, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) jointly released a statement, on July 22, 2008, reporting that they continue to find the vaccine safe and effective. The FDA approved Gardasil in June 2006 for use in girls and women 9 to 26 years of age to prevent infection with the human papillomavirus (HPV) that causes most types of cervical cancer and genital warts.

The Data Resource Center for Child and Adolescent Health, run by The Child and Adolescent Health Measurement Initiative, provides information from two national surveys. The National Survey of Children’s Health, 2003, allows you to compare results for your state, the nation, or subgroups of children, view state and regional profiles on key measures, and explore survey content relevant to Health People 2010. The National Survey of Children with Special Health Care Needs, 2001 and 2005-06, allows you to search and compare national, state or regional prevalence estimates, look for national, state or regional results on key indicators, and compare findings from different age, race, income or health status groups.
The Pediatric Environmental Health Toolkit is a clinical education tool that offers pediatric and family care providers practical guidance on preventing exposures to toxic chemicals. Consisting of innovative provider and patient materials developed with a team of pediatricians and endorsed by the American Academy of Pediatrics, the Toolkit fills an unmet demand for practical, clinical materials on children’s environmental health.
The Federal Interagency Forum on Child and Family Statistics’ report, America’s Children in Brief: Key National Indicators of Well-Being, 2008, examines measures of health, health care, physical environment and safety, behavior, economic circumstances, demographic background, family and social environment, and education. Favorable findings included a decline in childhood deaths from injuries and a decrease in the percentage of eighth graders who smoked daily.
