New Resources

Children in Immigrant Families in Eight Affluent Countries: Their Family, National, and International Context, released by UNICEF, presents data on children of immigrant families in Australia, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Switzerland, the United Kingdom and the United States.

The Quality Benchmark for Cultural Competence Project, by the National Association for the Education of Young Children, is designed as a guide for early childhood programs responding to the needs of diverse children and families.

Indicators for Social-emotional Development in Early Childhood: A Guide for Local Stakeholders, by the National Center for Children in Poverty, provides local stakeholders with the information and tools necessary to develop and utilize indicators for social-emotional development.

Treating Traumatized Immigrant and Refugee Youth, a webinar sponsored by The Center for Health and Health Care in Schools, was presented on December 10, 2009. Many immigrant and refugee youth in the United States have experienced traumatic events, including personal violence, community violence, war, forced displacement, loss of family members, and separation from loved ones. Treating trauma-related symptoms and promoting healthy coping are crucial steps towards helping these new American youth survive and thrive in their new home, schools and communities. American Academy of Dermatology – Shade Structure Grants

The American Academy of Dermatology's (AAD) Shade Structure Program awards grants for the purchase of permanent shade structures designed to provide shade and ultraviolet ray protection for outdoor areas. AAD also provides a permanent sign to be displayed near the shade structure that promotes the importance of sun safety.

National Institutes of Health and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention – School Nutrition and Physical Activity Policies, Obesogenic Behaviors and Weight Outcomes Research Grant

The purpose of the grant is to fund research that fosters multidisciplinary research that will evaluate how policies can influence school physical activity and nutrition environments, youths obesogenic behaviors, and weight outcomes; understand how schools are implementing these policies and examine multi-level influences on adoption and implementation at various levels; and understand the synergistic or counteractive effect of school nutrition and physical activity polices on the home and community environment and body weight.

Tony Hawk Foundation – Public Skatepark Grants

The purpose of the Tony Hawk Foundation is to foster lasting improvements in society, with an emphasis on supporting and empowering youth. The Foundation is currently offering funding to build high-quality, public skateparks in low-income areas throughout the United States. Training New Dental Professionals Shows Promise for Expanding Access of Care
Training new midlevel dental providers in the U.S. could significantly increase the access of basic dental care for underserved populations, according to a report released yesterday by the W.K. Kellogg Foundation.

Children in Immigrant Families in Eight Affluent Countries: Their Family, National, and International Context, released by UNICEF, presents data on children of immigrant families in Australia, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Switzerland, the United Kingdom and the United States. The paper analyzes internationally comparable data on migrant children in these countries, providing a greater understanding of the diversity of the population.

The Quality Benchmark for Cultural Competence Project, by the National Association for the Education of Young Children, is designed as a guide for early childhood programs responding to the needs of diverse children and families. This tool sets forth standards for the identification and improvement of cultural competency practices of quality rating and improvement systems (QRIS) in early childhood.

Indicators for Social-emotional Development in Early Childhood: A Guide for Local Stakeholders, by the National Center for Children in Poverty, provides local stakeholders with the information and tools necessary to develop and utilize indicators for social-emotional development. Strong evidence demonstrates a connection between early childhood social-emotional health and subsequent school success and health in adolescence, as well as long term health and well-being in adulthood. Programs that effectively address social-emotional health early in life can promote resilience and help prevent mental health problems later in life.

Youth Villages - Family Counselor (Worcester, MA)
Youth Villages is a national leader in the adoption and implementation of research-based treatment philosophies in the field of children's mental and behavioral health. Youth Villages is seeking a family counselor that would be responsible for counseling broad population of youth, including those involved with multiple child-serving systems and those at high risk of removal from their families. The family counselor will work with four to six families at a time, meet with families at least three times weekly, and deliver services in the family's home.
