New Resources

To identify best policy practices for children’s mental health service delivery, the National Center for Children in Poverty released the report Unclaimed Children Revisited: The Status of Children’s Mental Health Policy in the United States.

Results from the State of America’s Cities Survey are reported in the National League of Cities’ recent report, Poverty and Economic Insecurity: Views from City Hall. 
Of the report’s findings, 90 percent of city officials surveyed said the poverty rate in their cities has either increased or remained the same over the past 10 years.

The goal of the Refugee Family Services’ School Liaison Program  is to connect parents from multiple ethnic and cultural backgrounds with the U.S. school system to encourage parental involvement and ensure academic success and integration of refugee youth. The program is based in Atlanta, GA.

    Salud America! is a national program of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation that supports research on environmental and policy solutions to the epidemic of obesity among Latino children. The program also aims to develop a network of researchers whose findings will help identify the most promising obesity-prevention strategies specifically tailored for Latino communities.

    Bureau of Justice Assistance -- Gang Resistance Education And Training Program (Deadline: 1/22/09) 
    The Gang Resistance Education And Training (G.R.E.A.T.) Program is a school-based, law enforcement officer-instructed classroom curriculum administered by the Office of Justice Programs’ Bureau of Justice Assistance in cooperation with the Department of Justice’s Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. The program's primary objective is prevention and is intended as an immunization against delinquency, youth violence, and gang membership.

    National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) -- CHOICES Alcohol Education Grants  (Deadline: 2/16/09)
    In an effort to educate students about the risks involved with the misuse of alcohol, the NCAA has developed CHOICES, a grant program for alcohol education. Through the CHOICES program, the NCAA provides funding to integrate athletics into campus-wide efforts to reduce alcohol abuse.


    New Resources

    The National Center for Children in Poverty’s recently released report, Unclaimed Children Revisited: The Status of Children’s Mental Health Policy in the United States, aimed to assess how child mental health policies across the U.S. respond to children and youth with mental health problems, and their families. Areas examined include current service delivery policies and methods, policy barriers and opportunities, and approaches being taken to incorporate prevention activities. According to the report, only seven states provided consistent mental health support and funding for young children, school-age children, and youth transitioning to adulthood.

    The National League of Cities’ report, Poverty and Economic Insecurity: Views from City Hall, provides insight on the nature of poverty in the nation’s cities. Proving how outdated the federal poverty threshold is, 74 percent of the city officials surveyed said the poverty threshold in their city was higher than the federal poverty threshold ($17,170 for a family of three) and 41 percent said a family of three would need between $20,000 to $30,000 to get by. Thirty percent said the threshold was $30,000 or higher.

    The Refugee and Family Services’ School Liaison Program, based in Atlanta, GA, is offering free technical assistance to support the efforts of public or non-profit agencies that plan to establish a bilingual school liaison program or begin providing bilingual school liaison services. In schools that have implemented the program, 57 percent of teachers increased their understanding of how to work with refugees and other international children and 28 percent more international parents reported understanding the information their children bring home from school.
