New Resources
Children’s Defense Fund’s State of America’s Children 2008 Report provides national and state data on poverty, health, child welfare, youth at risk, early childhood development, education, nutrition and housing.
To support child welfare professionals who work with Spanish-speaking families, the Child Welfare Information Gateway is offering a variety of Resources in Spanish.
The January 7th issue of National Vital Statistics Reports, produced by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, provides final data on births in 2006, including details on the recent increase in the birth rate for 15-19 year olds.
New from the Center
A new report is available from the Center on School Mental Health Services for the 21st Century: Lessons from the District of Columbia School Mental Health Program. In the report, the Center developed a plan for sustaining and expanding school-based mental health services in Washington, DC. This report reviews the history of school mental health in the District of Columbia, reports on lessons learned from other states and localities, and identifies best and promising practices in organizational management, program development, professional training, and financing strategies.
On February 24, 2009, 2pm EST the Center is sponsoring a webinar on Helping immigrant and refugee students achieve school success: Partnering with families to support student mental health. The webinar will highlight strategies that engage family members, who often provide a close-knit, protective force in the child’s life.

Office of Safe and Drug-Free Schools of the Department of Education – Readiness and Emergency Management for Schools Grant Program (Deadline: 4/3/09) The Office of Safe and Drug-Free Schools provides grants to strengthen school emergency management plans. Programs that work to train school personnel and students on emergency management procedures, that communicate with parents about emergency procedures and that coordinate response efforts with law enforcement, public health and mental health services are encouraged to apply.
News AlertSocial Cohesiveness of Neighborhood Can Influence Children’s Physical Activity A new study published in the February edition of the American Journal of Public Health examined the link between children’s neighborhood environments, physical activity and weight. Controlling for demographic factors related to physical activity and childhood weight, the study found that a favorable social environmental was more strongly related to physical activity than the physical environment. Authors suggest that community based interventions aimed at improving physical activity levels in children should involve ways to enhance social cohesion in neighborhoods.
New Resources
Children’s Defense Fund’s State of America’s Children 2008 Report identifies the United States as the worse among industrialized nations in relative child poverty, the gap between rich and poor, teen birth rates, number of incarcerated persons, and child gun violence. Key findings include a recent increase in the number of children and teens killed by firearms and a half a million increase in the number of poor children.
The Child Welfare Information Gateway has launched a new section of its website titled Resources in Spanish to help child welfare professionals who serve Spanish-speaking families. All resources can be viewed, downloaded or ordered for free. Available materials include a glossary of English to Spanish and Spanish to English child welfare terms and topically organized resources on child abuse and neglect, preventing and responding to child abuse and neglect, supporting and preserving families, out-of-home care, and adoption.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s January 7th National Vital Statistics Report, the adolescent birth rate for 15 to 19 year olds showed a 3 to 4 percent increase in 2006 after decreasing for 14 years. Only the birth rate of adolescents ages 10-14 showed a decrease, to 0.6 per 1,000. Between 2005 and 2006, birth rates of non-Hispanic white, non-Hispanic black, and American Indian or Alaska Native teenagers increased 3 to 5 percent. The birth rate for Hispanic adolescents increased 2 percent.
