New from the Center

Addressing the Legal Issues Impacting Refugee and Immigrant Families, a video presentation by Mr. Fred Tsao, has been posted to the website. In this lecture, Mr. Tsao presents information on legal issues facing immigrants in the US including legal immigration categories, how immigrants can become citizens, sponsorship, public benefit eligibility, the impact of 1996 Welfare Reform, rules on public charge, and constitutional rights of illegal immigrants. Mr. Tsao is the Policy Director at the Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights. Treating Traumatized Immigrant and Refugee Youth, a webinar sponsored by The Center for Health and Health Care in Schools, was presented on December 10, 2009. Many immigrant and refugee youth in the United States have experienced traumatic events, including personal violence, community violence, war, forced displacement, loss of family members, and separation from loved ones. Treating trauma-related symptoms and promoting healthy coping are crucial steps towards helping these new American youth survive and thrive in their new home, schools and communities. Important Topic

The American Public Health Association is announcing the Call for Abstracts for the 2010 Annual Meeting to be held November 6-10, 2010, in Denver, Colorado. The theme of the meeting is “Social Justice: A Public Health Imperative.”

Abstracts in all areas of public health or that focus on the meeting theme are encouraged to apply. Abstracts should be no more than 250 words and must include a measurable learning objective. The deadline for submission ranges from February 1 through February 5, 2010, depending on the Section, SPIG, Caucus or Forum to which you wish to submit.

It provides information on how a Request for Application or a Request for Proposal is developed, and follows the process a submission makes once it reaches the funding agency. The series also describes factors that can disqualify an application and others that can make it memorable.

School-Related Resources for Refugee Families, by Bridging Refugee Youth and Children's Services, is a guidance sheet that highlights key school resources for refugee families. The guide offers twenty-six different resources and tips, including how to register a child for public school, a guide for connecting immigrant parents and schools, and a parent handbook intended to help immigrant families navigate the US public school system.

Preteens Need Vaccines Too!, released by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, highlights the important vaccines preteens should receive to promote health into their teenage years. The guide gives information on different types of vaccines, when preteens should receive vaccines, and on how to receive help paying for a child's immunizations.
