New Resources
 
A new research brief from Child Trends, Implementing School-Based Services: Strategies from New Mexico's School-Based Health and Extended Learning Services
, provides an overview of the challenges and strategies faced by practitioners and policy makers throughout the state and provides suggestions for school-based service implementation.

Many states’ HIV testing laws have been revised in the past few years.  To help clinicians understand these laws, the National HIV/AIDS Clinician’s Consultation Center has created the Compendium of State HIV Testing Laws
to describe key state HIV testing laws and policies.

To provide information on all the spacers, MDIs, DPIs and generic nebulizers being used in the US and the recent switch from CFC inhalers to the new HFA inhalers, the Asthma Education Clinic has published the reference guide,  Delivery Devices for Asthma and COPD: Selection, Use and Care. 

New from the Center

A new report is available from the Center on School Mental Health Services for the 21st Century: Lessons from the District of Columbia School Mental Health Program. In the report, the Center developed a plan for sustaining and expanding school-based mental health services in Washington, DC.  This report reviews the history of school mental health in the District of Columbia, reports on lessons learned from other states and localities, and identifies best and promising practices in organizational management, program development, professional training, and financing strategies.

On February 24, 2009, 2pm EST the Center is sponsoring a webinar on Helping immigrant and refugee students achieve school success: Partnering with families to support student mental health. The webinar will highlight strategies that engage family members, who often provide a close-knit, protective force in the child’s life.

    National Center for Injury Prevention and Control, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention – Youth Violence Prevention through Economic, Environmental, and Policy Change Grant Program (Deadline: 2/23/09)                                         
    The purpose of this program of research is to assess the efficacy or effectiveness of interventions and policies aiming to modify the economic or environmental factors of a community in order to reduce youth violence rates. Research funded by this program should extend knowledge on how interventions and policies designed to change environmental and economic determinants in communities can reduce violence.


    U.S. Department of Health and Human Services – State Implementation Grants for Integrated Community Systems for Health Care Needs

    The purpose of this initiative is to provide support to statewide implementation of the Health Resources and Services Administration component of the Presidents New Freedom Initiative to create inclusive community based systems of service for children and youth with special healthcare needs.


    National Center for Family Literacy – Toyota Family Literacy Program Grant Opportunity
    (Deadline: 2/20/09)
    Toyota and the National Center for Family Literacy (NCFL) established the Toyota Family Literacy Program in 2003 to improve the language and literacy skills of Hispanic and other immigrant families. NCFL is the lead developer of comprehensive family literacy initiatives and offers training and technical assistance to grant recipients for a three-year period.

    Florida Department of Health, Office of Minority Health Funding – Reducing Racial and Ethnic Health Disparities: Closing the Gap Grant Program (Deadline: 3/3/09)
    The Reducing Racial and Ethnic Health Disparities: Closing the Gap Grant Program strives to eliminate racial and ethnic health disparities in Florida by providing grants to local counties and organizations that work to increase community-based health promotion and disease prevention initiatives. Specifically, the grant program seeks to eliminate health disparities regarding adult and child immunization, cancer, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, HIV/AIDS, maternal and infant mortality and oral health.

    U.S. Department of Justice, Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA) – Justice and Mental Health Collaboration Program (Deadline: 3/12/09)                         
    The Justice and Mental Health Collaboration Program seeks to increase public safety through innovative cross-system collaboration for individuals with mental illness or co-occurring mental health and substance use orders who come into contact with the criminal justice system. The BJA seeks joint justice and mental health applications to plan, implement or expand a justice and mental health collaboration program.

    Study Examines Neurological Development of Children Receiving Vaccines that Contained Thimerosal
    A new study published in Pediatrics examines two groups of children who received different amounts of thimerosal through childhood vaccines to investigate whether the children who had higher thimerosal-intake levels had delayed neurological development as suggested by autism advocates and vaccine critics. Thimerosal, a mercury-containing preservative, was used routinely until recent years to extend the shelf life of vaccines, but as a precautionary measure, vaccine manufacturers have been using other preservatives.

    New Reports on Children’s Health Insurance Coverage Released by Kaiser Family Foundation
    At a Kaiser Family Foundation briefing January 23, several new reports were released that proposed strategies for enrolling uninsured children in Medicaid and SCHIP, provided an overview of the challenges associated with expanding coverage in a recession, and updated their yearly publication of eligibility requirements in the 50 states and summarized health insurance coverage trends.

     

    New Resources

    In May 2008, practitioners and policy makers from across New Mexico participated in three Roundtable discussions on implementing school based health services and extended learning opportunities in the state. Child Trends reports on the results of these discussions in their research brief, Implementing School-Based Services: Strategies from New Mexico’s School-Based Health and Extended Learning Services. Challenges to school based service delivery are addressed and strategies to meet these challenges are described.

    Since the release of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s 2006 HIV Testing Recommendations, many states have updated their HIV testing laws. To help clinicians implement sound HIV testing policies, the National HIV/AIDS Clinician’s Consultation Center at the University of California, San Francisco has compiled the Compendium of State HIV Testing Laws. All information is available online, including definitions and helpful resources, a quick reference guide, and an interactive map for retrieving info by state.

    The Asthma Education Clinic’s reference guide, Delivery Devices for Asthma and COPD: Selection, Use and Care provides directions for using, cleaning and caring for asthma medication delivery devices in an easy to read format.  In addition to teaching tips for asthma educators, this reference guide now features three new topics: (1) When is an MDI empty?, (2) Inhalers: CFC or HFA, and (3) Spacers and Holding Chambers.
