New Resources
The National Association of School Nurses has developed Sick Day Guidelines: Making the Right Call When Your Child Has a Cold to help parents decide if and when coughs and sniffles are a reason to keep a child home from school.
The Child Welfare Information Gateway has created a factsheet on How the Child Welfare System Works to provide a brief overview of the system’s purposes and functions from a national perspective.
New from the Center
A new report is available from the Center on School Mental Health Services for the 21st Century: Lessons from the District of Columbia School Mental Health Program. In the report, the Center developed a plan for sustaining and expanding school-based mental health services in Washington, DC. This report reviews the history of school mental health in the District of Columbia, reports on lessons learned from other states and localities, and identifies best and promising practices in organizational management, program development, professional training, and financing strategies.

USDA Reports Salmonella-Tainted Peanut Butter Sent to Schools in 2007 The US Department of Agriculture reported late last week that the agency had purchased peanut butter for school lunch and other nutrition assistance programs from the Peanut Corporation of America, the firm at the center of the country’s widespread salmonella outbreak. The outbreak has claimed 8 lives and affected people in 47 states.
President Obama Rescinds Controversial Bush Administration Memo on SCHIP Eligibility Guidelines When he signed the State Child Health Insurance Program (SCHIP) reauthorization this past week, President Obama also instructed the US Department of Health and Human Services to withdraw a directive issued by the Bush Administration in August 2007 that prohibited states from expanding eligibility guidelines.
President Obama Signs S-CHIP Reauthorization Bill Into Law After passing the Senate and House with votes from both parties, on February 4, 2009 President Barack Obama signed into law the S-CHIP bill that reauthorized the program for another ten years. Section 505 of the law clarifies that states are not limited by anything in the program from delivering services through School-Based Health Centers (SBHCs).
Study Finds School-Supervised Asthma Medication Treatment Effective Researchers found that asthmatic children who took prescribed medication while supervised at school were less likely to experience an episode of poor asthma control than study participants who were supposed to use the medication at home. This study’s findings are consistent with 2 smaller studies about school-supervised asthma medication treatment. Authors suggest that schools (even those not staffed with a nurse) are an appropriate setting for supervised medication use.
New Resources
The National Association of School Nurses’ Sick Day Guidelines: Making the Right Call When Your Child Has a Cold helps parents answer questions on when to keep a child home from school, what symptoms indicate the flu, how to make a sick child feel better, and how to prevent a child from getting a cold. Information is provided in both English and Spanish on an easy to read two-page flyer.
To help service providers navigate the complex child welfare system, the Child Welfare Information Gateway created the fact sheet, How the Child Welfare System Works. This factsheet addresses what happens when possible abuse or neglect is reported, what happens after a report is “screened in”, what happens in substantiated cases, what happens to people who abuse children, and what happens to children who enter foster care. A graphic overview ties all the information together. The fact sheet is also available in Spanish.
