New Resources

Sick Schools 2009, released by the Healthy Schools Network, Inc., offers peer-reviewed studies and compelling evidence of how polluted air inside and outside schools escalate health care costs, increase absenteeism, and reduce test scores. The national report, with contributions from policy advocates in 20 states and the District, offers a state by state assessment of the issues facing schools. The report finds that there is no systematic national state by state survey of the conditions of schools and states have little capacity to address children’s environmental health at school.

Immunizations: Resource Brief, released by The Maternal and Child Health Library at Georgetown University, is a guide to Web sites and other resources on immunization-related topics for health professionals, the media, policymakers, and the public. The brief lists and describes federal agency, professional organization, and advocacy Web sites containing electronic publications that provide information on child, adolescent, and adult vaccinations and immunizations, including materials in non-English languages, policy statements, recommendations, and reports.

Minnesota: Moving a Legacy Forward, released by Center for the Study of Social Policy, describes how Minnesota has been working to strengthen families with particular attention to the role of culture. Minnesota’s new family strengthening initiative seeks to identify culture as a protective factor in child abuse prevention.  The initiative is working from the ground-up by way of grants to community-based agencies that agree to use protective factors knowledge in their work to strengthen families and improve child welfare.
