The Family Dinner Table: Implications for Children’s Health and Wellbeing is a report brief published by the Society for Research in Child Development. According to the brief, children who participate in regular family mealtimes display higher levels of academic achievement than those who don’t, and are more likely to eat fruits, vegetables, and low-calorie and low-fat meals. This two-page brief is easy to read and can provide families and policy makers with information to develop and support healthy eating habits.
Most researchers agree the federal poverty line income is generally not sufficient to support the majority of families. In addition, because the cost of living differs greatly across the U.S., the income needed by families also varies. The Economic Policy Institute’s Family Budget Calculator takes into account family type, state, and specific geographic area to calculate the budget needed to sustain a family. It is important to note that the calculated budget is very basic, and includes only food, shelter, clothing, and transportation to work and school.
