A Social Worker’s Tool Kit for Working With Immigrant Families - A Child Welfare Flowchart and A Social Worker’s Tool Kit for Working with Immigrant Families -- Immigration Status and Relief Options, by American Humane, provide public child welfare workers with a basic understanding and overview of the U.S. immigration system and how and when immigration issues may arise during the chronology of a child welfare case.

Safety of Influenza A (H1N1) 2009 Monovalent Vaccines, released by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, discusses the safety of H1N1 vaccines in the United States.

It Takes a Community to Teach Our Children, published in Maryland’s Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages, discusses how one elementary school in Maryland handled a sudden increase in English Language Learners, many of whom were refugees.

The Center for Health and Health Care in Schools sponsored a Webinar, Treating Traumatized Immigrant and Refugee Youth, on December 10, 2009. Many immigrant and refugee youth in the United States have experienced traumatic events, including personal violence, community violence, war, forced displacement, loss of family members, and separation from loved ones. Treating trauma-related symptoms and promoting healthy coping are crucial steps towards helping these new American youth survive and thrive in their new home, schools and communities. Head Start Programs Exceeding Healthy Eating and Physical Activity Requirements
Most Head Start programs report doing more to support healthy eating and physical activity than required by federal performance standards, according to a study in the December 2009 issue of Archives of Pediatrics & Adolescent Medicine.

Teen Use of Methamphetamines and Cigarette Smoking has Significantly Declined but Steady Marijuana and Prescription Drug Use Remain Areas of Concern
Methamphetamine use among adolescents has dropped in recent years, according to the National Institute on Drug Abuse’s (NIDA) Monitoring the Future survey released December 14, 2009 and cigarette smoking remains at its lowest point since the survey began in 1975. However, the survey also shows that the decline in marijuana use has stalled and prescription drug abuse is still high.

This executive summary outlines each tool kit and should be used to promote the use of the tool kits as best practice for child welfare.

Safety of Influenza A (H1N1) 2009 Monovalent Vaccines, released by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, discusses the safety of H1N1 vaccines in the United States. The study reports that 82 adverse events were reported per 1 million H1N1 vaccine doses distributed, compared with 47 reports for seasonal influenza vaccine. However, no substantial differences were noted in the serious adverse events reported for the two vaccine types, and no increase in any adverse events has been seen in the data.
