CDC Analyzes High School Athletes and Heat Related Illness

Heat related illness in high school athletes causes them collectively to lose more than 9,000 days of play time each year according to a study published in the Center for Disease Control and Prevention August 20, 2010 Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report. The study looked at data from the National High School Sports-Related Injury Surveillance System between the years of 2005 and 2009.  The data was gathered on nine sports and used a sample of 100 high schools. The highest rate of time lost to heat related illness was among football players and the time-loss heat illnesses occurred most frequently during August while practicing or playing football. The study advises high school athletic programs to implement the National Athletic Trainers’ Association’s heat-acclimatization guidelines and for athletes, parents, coaches, and trainers to know the signs and symptoms of heat related illness and how to best prevent it.

New Resources

CHA Transformation: Children and Youth, published by the Urban Institute, examines the welfare of children relocated from the public housing developments of the Chicago Housing Authority through the HOPE IV Panel study. Since the baseline in 2001, the study has documented improvements as well as areas of concern.  Environmental safety and health risks have decreased, but the social environment, including gangs, still pose serious problems. http://www.urban.org/url.cfm?ID=412185

Childhood Obesity: The New Tobacco, published in Health Affairs, discusses the need for childhood obesity prevention to become a social movement, similar to previous campaigns to prevent smoking and tobacco. Tobacco control became successful as a public health movement by changing social norms and framing tobacco companies as a common enemy. The movement to overcome childhood obesity has not unified into a cohesive movement or public health threat. However, according to the researchers, framing obesity as a common threat can lead to consensus regarding the interventions needed to achieve healthier children and communities. http://content.healthaffairs.org/cgi/content/abstract/29/3/388?maxtoshow=&hits=10&RESULTFORMAT=&fulltext=obesity&searchid=1&FIRSTINDEX=0&resourcetype=HWCIT

School Health: Resource Brief, assembled by the Maternal and Child Health Library at Georgetown University, is a database of organizations and topics related to school health. The resources include topics such as abstinence education, pregnancy prevention, bullying, overweight in children and adolescents, and many more. http://www.mchlibrary.info/guides/schoolhealth.html
