Bridging Refugee Youth & Children’s Services has revised  Growing Up in a New Country: A Positive Youth Development Toolkit for Working with Refugees and Immigrants
in order to support service providers in their efforts to develop quality programming for the newcomer youth in their communities. Refugees and immigrants between the ages of 13 and 19 are an important and growing part of American society, and they have a vital role in the future of this country. More than a third of all refugees resettling in the United States today are under the age of 18, and children of immigrants now number close to one-quarter of all children and youth in this country.  This “Toolkit” pulls together articles, resources and programs which can assist agencies in adopting a Positive Youth Development approach to working with newcomer youth.

The National Directory of Drug and Alcohol Abuse Treatment Programs 2009,  a new, updated guide to finding local substance abuse treatment programs, is now available from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration. The National Directory includes a nationwide inventory of public and private substance abuse and alcoholism treatment programs and facilities that are licensed, certified, or otherwise approved by substance abuse agencies in each state. The directory provides important information on levels of care and types of facilities, including those with programs for adolescents, persons with co-occurring substance abuse and mental disorders, individuals living with HIV/AIDS, and pregnant women.

Recommendations for Blood Lead Screening of Medicaid-Eligible Children Aged 1--5 Years: an Updated Approach to Targeting a Group at High Risk, a recently released Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, provides recommendations for improving blood lead level screening and information for healthcare providers, state officials, and others interested in lead-related services for Medicaid-eligible children. Eliminating elevated blood lead levels (EBLLs) among children is one of the 2010 U.S. national health objectives. Evidence indicates that children in low-income families are experiencing decreases in BLLs, suggesting that the EBLL disparity between Medicaid-eligible children and non--Medicaid-eligible children is diminishing. The CDC recommends that state and local public health officials 1) update blood lead screening policies for Medicaid-eligible children, 2) improve rates of blood lead screening among Medicaid-eligible children determined to be at increased risk for lead exposure, and 3) design and implement updated surveillance and evaluation strategies.
