Weekly Insider 26.03.2008

The Center for Health and Health Care in Schools Weekly Insider is a web-enhanced newsletter that offers news alerts, grant announcements and general web site updates delivered directly to your email box on a weekly basis. The Center is located at the School of Public Health and Health Services at The George Washington University Medical Center in Washington, D.C.

New this month from the Center

In mid-March the Center hosted a 3-day conference in LA that brought together grantees of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) that are receiving support for their work with immigrant and refugee families. Included were those funded to expand mental health services for children and youth through school-connected programs (Caring Across Communities - CAC) as well as a diverse group of projects funded through the RWJF Fresh Ideas initiative. The CAC National Advisory Committee Chair, Dr. Tedla Giorgis, (pictured left) spoke for many immigrants when he said, "We come from a 3000-year-old culture, we have something to share."

While all the presentations received high marks, there was particular applause for sessions on fund-raising and program evaluations. CAC small group sessions spent considerable time assessing lessons learned during their first year of program development. Powerpoint presentations and session notes from the conference will be posted to the web site (www.healthinschools) during April.
