A New Report Indicates Many Children Are Not Receiving Required Preventive Screening Services
A new report, “Most Medicaid Children in Nine States Are Not Receiving All Required Preventive Screening Services” was released by the Office of Inspector General on May 21, 2010. Information for the report came from chart reviews of medical records of children enrolled in Medicaid nine selected states in 2007. They looked at medical, hearing and vision screens. From this chart review, it was found that 76% of the children did not receive 1 or more of the required Early Periodic Screening, Diagnostic and Treatment Program medical, vision or hearing screens and 59% of children receiving medical screenings did not receive all five required components. All nine states reported that they had strategies in place to improve the participation and ensure complete EPSDT screenings would take place.
