Leading National Foundations Call for Increased Investment in Prevention Efforts

Leading national foundations and health care organizations call for any health care change for this nation to include “robust provisions for community prevention and health care coverage for all.” In an open letter released August 17, 2009, the leaders of The California Endowment, The Kresge Foundation, Nemours, Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, and W.K. Kellogg Foundation and a top official at Kaiser Permanente issued a joint call for action saying “over time a focus on community prevention will improve health, save money, reduce the demands on our health system and most important it will lead to a nation of healthier people and healthier places to live.” A study last year from the Trust for America's Health showed that for every dollar invested in proven community-based disease prevention programs, $5.60 is saved.
