English Language Learners do Equally Well Regardless of Whether the Instruction Approach is English Immersion or Bilingual Education

Education Week reports that a 5-year study conducted by Professor Robert Slavin and colleagues at Johns Hopkins University and funded by the US Department of Education has found Spanish-speaking children learn to read English equally well regardless of whether they are taught primarily in English or in both English and their native language. This is the first randomized assignment study of this sort. These findings will be presented at the America Educational Research Association at the end of this month. Also of note, Professor Christopher Jepson, a economist at the University of Kentucky, reports similar outcomes in a study of bilingual education and English immersion programs in California.
