Children in Balance -- The Balance Project: Bringing Healthy Eating and Active Living to Children’s Environments

Children in Balance, a project of the New Balance Foundation, is accepting applications for its Balance Project: Bringing Healthy Eating and Active Living to Children’s Environments grant program. The purpose of the program is to determine whether a program to improve the health of 1st-3rd graders and their families that was previously successful in Somerville, Massachusetts is able to help other under-served, urban communities nationwide.

Award amounts are $300,000 over two years for three intervention communities; and $10,000 in 2008-2009 for three control communities; communities must contribute $100,000 over two years. Eligible applicants are nonprofit or local government agencies in communities (incorporated, urban cities with populations of 50,000-125,000 with an independent government structure including an elected mayor) that demonstrate racial, ethnic, and economic diversity; and have an established, community-based coalition working on issues of childhood obesity that includes a wide representation of stakeholders ready to act, but not yet engaged in any major prior or current school-wide or community-wide childhood obesity intervention.

Deadline: November 15, 2007
