U.S. Department of Justice, Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA) – Justice and Mental Health Collaboration Program

The Justice and Mental Health Collaboration Program seeks to increase public safety through innovative cross-system collaboration for individuals with mental illness or co-occurring mental health and substance use orders who come into contact with the criminal justice system. The BJA seeks joint justice and mental health applications to plan, implement or expand a justice and mental health collaboration program.

Three categories of awards are available:
1. Category I: Planning—up to $50,000 available for a 12-month period. Applicants (local or state level) will design a strategic, collaborative plan to initiate systemic change for the identification and treatment of system-involved individuals with mental illness.
2. Category II: Planning and Implementation—up to $250,000 available for a 30 month period. Applicants will complete an already-initiated strategic plan for the criminal justice and mental health or co-occurring mental health and substance use disorder collaboration and begin implementing plan.
3. Category III: Expansion—up to $200,000 available for a 24-month period. Applicants will expand upon or improve their well-established collaboration plan.

Eligible applicants are limited to states, units of local government, federally recognized Indian tribes and tribal organizations. Each applicant must demonstrate that the proposed project will be administered jointly by a unit of government with responsibility for criminal or juvenile justice activities and a mental health agency.

Deadline: March 12, 2009

Please Note: The Center for Health and Health Care in Schools (CHHCS) does not administer this funding opportunity.
